Missing this Key Nutrient Can Be Making Your Child Overweight

Vitamin D deficiency is increasingly common in Americans. Learn what a lack of Vitamin D does to your body and how you can easy address the issue to improve your health.

Childhood obesity in the United States is increasing at an alarming rate.  It is now estimated that childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 30 years and 1 out of every 5 children are now obese.  As weight gain increases throughout childhood, obese children suffer from low self esteem and become more at risk for joint pain, type II diabetes, heart disease, several types of cancer, stroke, and osteoarthritis.[1. U.S. Surgeon General. Overweight and Obesity: Health Consequences. Rockville: MD; 2001.] While high intakes of sugar, toxic exposure to chemicals in our food and environment, and a lack of exercise are clearly to blame, scientists are now pointing to another factor contributing to childhood weight gain – low levels of Vitamin D could be making our children fat!

According to a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, children with low levels of Vitamin D accumulated more fat around their waistline and gained weight more rapidly than youngsters who received adequate amounts of Vitamin D.  The results also linked lower Vitamin D levels to a slower growth in height in some children.[2. Gilbert-Diamond, D. et al.  Vitamin D deficiency and anthropometric indicators of adiposity in school-age children: a prospective study. Am J Clin Nutr Oct. 2010 ajcn.29746]
