Over 90 million Americans will experience dizziness or balance problems at some point in their lives.1 Vertigo and dizziness can be debilitating disorders that can practically cripple a person for days, if not weeks or years. However, many of us are unaware of the relationship between upper cervical (neck) trauma and vertigo and dizziness.
There are a lot of unanswered questions as to the cause of vertigo.; however, we do know that the onset of a symptom is always associated with the body’s inability to adapt. This inability is always precipitated from some form of trauma. Whether it be a car accident, slip, fall, chronic poor posture or any other number of things, the spine absorbs theses traumas and they accumulate and cause dysfunction in the body.
The current research is starting to show upper cervical trauma as an underlying cause for many types of vertigo. With so many nerves transmitting through the upper cervical spine (to and from the brain), injury to this area results in problems to other areas of the body. This is where the relationship between the upper cervical area and vertigo becomes obvious. If these vertebrae become shifted (called subluxation), even slightly, vertigo can occur. Unless the cause of the neck injury is confronted, the symptoms will persist.
The Journal of Vertebral Subluxation reported the results of 60 patients under chiropractic care suffering from vertigo. Fifty-six out of the 60 patients noted a trauma prior to the onset of their dizziness and 100 percent of the patients were found to have subluxation. When the patients in this study underwent chiropractic care, 100 percent reported positive effects. Ranging from 1 to 6 months, 48 of the 60 patients had complete resolution of their vertigo symptoms.2
It is important to know that removal of subluxation restores life to your body and the resolution of symptoms generally occurs. However, the resolution of symptoms is only the first step in correcting the problem. Spinal correction is the key to removing the cause of the problem and maintaining body function at the highest possible level. Our Maximized Living Essential #2, Maximized Nerve Supply, covers correcting vertebral alignment and posture and this has a marked effect on the central nervous system and how well it functions and produces a well-balanced body chemistry.
A chiropractor specifically trained in spinal correction can help you with this disorder.
